What's After the Movie

Susanna Javicoli

Susanna Javicoli (7 August 1954 – 17 June 2005) was an Italian actress and prolific voice‑over talent whose career spanned more than three decades, leaving an indelible mark on both theatre and cinema. She began her professional journey in the early 1970s, quickly gaining recognition for her work in televised adaptations of Shakespearean plays, where her nuanced performance style demonstrated a rare blend of classical training and contemporary sensibility. Her film debut came with La nottata (1974), where she portrayed Angela, a role that opened doors to a steady stream of supporting parts in notable Italian productions such as Dario Argento’s cult classic Suspiria (1977) and Armaguedon (1977). Beyond the screen, Javicoli was a respected member of the Silvio D'Amico National Academy of Dramatic Arts, collaborating with respected directors like Mario Missiroli and Carlo Cecchi, and honing her craft in avant‑garde stage projects that emphasized experimental dialogue and physical expression. Parallel to her on‑screen work, she built a remarkable reputation as a voice actress, becoming the preferred Italian dubbing artist for a roster of Hollywood stars including Michelle Pfeiffer, Bonnie Bedelia, Elizabeth Perkins, Miranda Richardson, Holly Hunter, and Melanie Griffith. Her most iconic dubbing achievement was providing the Italian voice for the beloved character Darling in the 1997 redub of Disney’s Lady and the Tramp and its sequel Lady and the Tramp II: Scamp’s Adventure. Javicoli’s versatility extended to dialogue writing and dubbing direction, roles that allowed her to shape the Italian localization of international films with cultural sensitivity and artistic precision. Tragically, her life was cut short by terminal kidney cancer, and she passed away on 17 June 2005, just weeks shy of her 51st birthday. Her legacy endures through the films she graced, the countless characters she gave voice to, and the lasting influence she exerted on Italy’s dubbing industry.
