Sue Lyon

Suellyn "Sue" Lyon was born on July 10, 1946 in Davenport, Iowa, the youngest of five children. After her father died before she turned one, her mother moved the family to Los Angeles, where Sue began work as a child model before landing her first screen roles. At the age of fourteen she was selected from a pool of eight hundred teenagers to portray Dolores "Lolita" Haze in Stanley Kubrick’s controversial 1962 adaptation of Vladimir Nabokov’s novel, a casting decision that the author later praised as the “perfect nymphet.” The role made her an instant international celebrity; she won a Golden Globe for Most Promising Newcomer – Female and appeared on the cover of numerous magazines. Despite her youth, Lyon was required to appear as a sexualised figure to satisfy the Production Code Administration, a circumstance she later described as the source of her personal destruction. The film’s success propelled her into a string of high‑profile projects, including The Night of the Iguana (1964) with Richard Burton, John Ford’s 7 Women (1966) alongside Anne Bancroft, and the Frank Sinatra vehicle Tony Rome (1967). Throughout the 1960s she was a recognizable face of Hollywood, yet the shadow of Lolita lingered over every subsequent role.

After her contract with Kubrick and Seven Arts ended, Lyon’s career drifted toward B‑movies and low‑budget genre fare such as Four Rode Out (1969) and the sci‑fi cult classics Crash! (1977) and The Astral Factor (1978). Her personal life was equally turbulent: she married five times—first to actor Hampton Fancher, then to football coach Roland Harrison (with whom she had her only child, Nona), followed by convicted murderer Cotton Adamson, Edward Weathers, and finally engineer Richard Rudman, a marriage that ended in 2002. Lyon struggled with bipolar disorder and largely withdrew from the public eye after her final screen appearance in Alligator (1980). She died in West Hollywood on December 26, 2019, at the age of 73, leaving behind a complex legacy defined both by her iconic early performance and the personal hardships that followed.
