What's After the Movie
Steven Page (born Steven Jay Page on 1970-06-22) is a Canadian musician, singer, songwriter and record producer best known as a founding member of the pop‑rock band Barenaked Ladies. He grew up in the Toronto suburb of Scarborough, Ontario, where his father Victor, a drummer, introduced him to rhythm and melody at an early age. After skipping first grade, Page entered a gifted program at Churchill Heights Public School and later joined the Toronto Mendelssohn Youth Choir, developing a solid foundation in choral music. His friendship with future bandmate Ed Robertson began in high school and blossomed into collaborative songwriting sessions at the Scarborough Schools Music Camp in 1988, leading to the formation of Barenaked Ladies that same year. As the group's primary lyricist and lead vocalist, Page co‑wrote many of their biggest hits, including the SOCAN‑awarded “Pinch Me,” and helped shape their quirky, hook‑laden sound across the 1990s and early 2000s. In February 2009, citing creative differences and personal challenges—including a highly publicized cocaine possession charge—he left the band to pursue a solo career and theatrical projects. His solo discography features the experimental Vanity Project collaboration with Stephen Duffy, the live‑oriented A Singer Must Die, and the critically praised albums Page One (2010), Heal Thyself Pt. 1: Instinct (2016), Discipline: Heal Thyself Pt. II (2018), and Excelsior (2022), all of which explore themes of grief, mental health, and personal renewal. Page has also ventured into television with The Illegal Eater, appeared on How I Met Your Mother, and performed at high‑profile events such as the NHL Winter Classic and the Governor General's Awards. He is married to Christine Benedicto (since 2011) after a previous marriage to Carolyn Ricketts (1993‑2009), and they share three sons. Open about his bipolar disorder, Page uses his platform to advocate for mental‑health awareness while continuing to contribute to Canada's vibrant music scene.
