Steve O'Connell

Stephen O'Connell, commonly known as Steve O'Connell, is a British Conservative politician whose public service spanned more than two decades. Born on 9 September 1956 in Dulwich, London, he grew up in South London and attended the historic Brockley County Grammar School, where he first displayed an interest in civic affairs. After completing his education, O'Connell entered the financial sector, qualifying as a mortgage broker and financial adviser before embarking on a long banking career that included 28 years at Barclays Bank as well as positions at HSBC and NatWest, giving him a deep understanding of fiscal policy and consumer finance. His professional experience laid a solid foundation for his later political work, especially in areas related to public safety and community cohesion. In 2002 O'Connell was elected to Croydon Council representing the Kenley Ward, quickly rising to become Deputy Leader of the Conservative Group and, following the party’s 2006 council victory, Deputy Leader with responsibility for safety and cohesion, where he championed initiatives to improve local policing and social integration. He expanded his political influence by securing a seat on the London Assembly for Croydon and Sutton in May 2008, a role he maintained until May 2021. While serving as an Assembly Member, he continued to sit on Croydon Council’s cabinet and contributed to the Metropolitan Police Authority, later advising Deputy Mayor Stephen Greenhalgh on policing and crime. Throughout his tenure, O'Connell was known for his pragmatic approach, blending his banking expertise with a commitment to community service, and he advocated for reforms such as revising stop‑and‑search policies. He retired from both the London Assembly and Croydon Council in 2021, leaving a legacy of steady public service grounded in financial acumen and a focus on public safety.
