What's After the Movie

Sidney Cole

Sidney Henry Cole (31 October 1908 – 25 January 1998) was a British film and television producer whose career spanned more than four decades, beginning in the mid‑1930s as a scenario reader and film editor before moving into senior producing roles at some of the United Kingdom’s most influential studios. Educated at the London School of Economics, Cole entered the industry with Stoll Picture Productions, where he honed his narrative instincts reading scripts and quickly progressed to editing for director Thorold Dickinson on The High Command (1936) and the classic suspense film Gaslight (1940). His collaboration with Alberto Cavalcanti on Went the Day Well? (1942) earned him lasting admiration; he later recalled that the film was “very tightly edited by me” and described working with Cavalcanti as “a joy.” After eleven years at Ealing Studios, where he was credited as an associate producer on several post‑war projects, Cole became a key figure at ITV contractor ITC, producing the iconic spy series Danger Man (known in the United States as Secret Agent) from 1964 to 1967 and the gritty Man in a Suitcase (1967–68). In the 1970s and early 1980s he supervised beloved period adventures such as The Adventures of Black Beauty (1972–74) and Dick Turpin (1979–82) for London Weekend Television, operating through the Gatetarn production company he co‑founded with Richard Carpenter and Paul Knight. Politically engaged throughout his career, Cole helped document the Spanish Civil War with Dickinson and, during the McCarthy era, employed nearly two dozen blacklisted American writers on The Adventures of Robin Hood (1955–60), a series produced under the guidance of exile‑producer Hannah Weinstein. He also co‑founded the ACTT union with Peter Proud, advocating for the rights of film and television workers. Sidney Cole’s legacy endures in the rich catalogue of British cinema and television that he helped shape, reflecting a blend of technical skill, creative vision, and steadfast commitment to artistic freedom.
