What's After the Movie

Shizuka Ishibashi

Shizuka Ishibashi is a Japanese actress and dancer born on July 8, 1994 in Tokyo, Japan, the second of three daughters of veteran actors Ryo Ishibashi and Mieko Harada. From the age of four she began classical ballet, a discipline that shaped her artistic sensibility and work ethic. In 2009 she ventured abroad, studying at prestigious ballet schools in Boston and Calgary, experiences that broadened her cultural outlook and refined her technical skill. After returning to Japan in 2013 she pursued contemporary dance, performing with several avant‑garde companies before making the decisive shift to acting in 2015. Her early stage work includes a notable appearance in Noda Hideki’s production Gekirin (January‑April 2016), where she demonstrated a seamless blend of physicality and dramatic nuance, earning praise from critics for her ability to convey emotion through movement.

Her breakthrough on screen came in 2017 with the lead role in Yuya Ishii’s The Tokyo Night Sky Is Always the Densest Shade of Blue, a performance that garnered her the Blue Ribbon Award for Best Newcomer—mirroring a historic achievement by her mother, who won the same award in 1976, marking the first parent‑child double in the ceremony’s history. Since then she has built a diverse filmography, appearing in both independent features and mainstream productions, as well as television dramas and music videos such as Tamaki ROY’s Furukotobumi (2017). Beyond her professional life, Shizuka’s older sister Yuga pursues a singing career, and the siblings collaborated on a Uniqlo commercial in 2017. Represented by Plage talent agency, Ishibashi continues to expand her artistic repertoire, balancing her dance roots with increasingly complex acting roles.
