Shirley Chisholm

Shirley Anita Chisholm was born on November 30, 1924 in Brooklyn, New York, to Afro‑Guyanese and Afro‑Barbadian immigrant parents. After spending four formative years (ages five to nine) on the island of Barbados with her maternal grandmother, she returned to the United States and excelled at Girls' High School before earning a BA in sociology from Brooklyn College in 1946 and an MA in childhood education from Columbia University in 1951. She began her professional life as a teacher’s aide in Harlem, later directing several nursery schools and serving as an educational consultant for New York City’s Bureau of Child Welfare, where she became a recognized authority on early‑childhood education and day‑care administration. These early experiences forged her lifelong commitment to improving services for the poor and to challenging systemic discrimination.

In 1964 Chisholm broke gender barriers by winning a seat in the New York State Assembly, and four years later she became the first Black woman elected to the United States Congress, representing Brooklyn’s 12th district from 1969 to 1983. While in Congress she helped expand food‑stamp benefits, co‑authored the creation of the WIC program, and served on the influential Education and Labor Committee. In 1972 she launched a historic presidential campaign, becoming the first Black candidate for a major‑party nomination and the first woman to vie for the Democratic presidential ticket; her “unbought and unbossed” slogan resonated across the nation. After retiring she taught at Mount Holyoke College, co‑founded the National Congress of Black Women, and remained an active voice for civil‑rights, feminist, and anti‑war causes until her death on January 1 2005. Posthumously she received the Presidential Medal of Freedom (2015) and a Congressional Gold Medal (2024), and her legacy endures in monuments, a state park, and countless political leaders who cite her as an inspiration.
