Shakira, Lady Caine, born Shakira Baksh on 23 February 1947 in St. Cuthbert's Mission, British Guiana (now Guyana), is a Guyanese-British former actress and model who rose to international prominence after winning the Miss Guyana title in 1967. Born to Muslim Indian parents, with her mother working as a dressmaker, Baksh initially aspired to enter the fashion industry and follow in her mother's footsteps. However, her life took a dramatic turn when her employer at the British embassy encouraged her to participate in the national beauty pageant at the age of nineteen while she was working as a secretary there. Her victory in the Miss Guyana competition led her to represent her country at the prestigious Miss World 1967 contest held in London, where she achieved an impressive second runner-up finish by placing third overall among international competitors. She also made memorable television appearances in four episodes of the science fiction series UFO, including notable installments like "ESP" and "The Responsibility Seat", and even auditioned for the role of Jo Grant opposite Jon Pertwee in the long-running series Doctor Who. Her personal life intersected with her professional work when she starred alongside her husband, Sir Michael Caine, in The Man Who Would Be King (1975), after the couple married in Las Vegas on 8 January 1973.
