Serge Korber

Serge Korber (1 February 1936 – 23 January 2022) was a prolific French film director and screenwriter whose career spanned over four decades, delivering more than forty titles that ranged from slapstick comedies to poignant dramas. Born in Paris, Korber entered the cinematic world in the early 1960s, quickly establishing a reputation for his deft handling of genre conventions and his ability to elicit both laughter and empathy from audiences. His early work, such as An Idiot in Paris (1967) and A Little Virtuous (1968), showcased a flair for light‑hearted storytelling, but it was his collaboration with the legendary Louis de Funès that cemented his status as a master of French comedy. The 1970 musical comedy L'homme orchestre and the whimsical Perched on a Tree (1971), co‑starring Geraldine Chaplin, demonstrated Korber’s talent for orchestrating ensemble casts and timing visual gags with precision. Beyond comedy, Korber earned critical acclaim for his tragic drama Hearth Fires (1972), a moving portrait of mother‑daughter relationships starring Annie Girardot and Claude Jade; the film was selected as the official French entry at the Cannes Film Festival that year, underscoring his versatility and emotional depth. Throughout the 1970s and 1980s, he continued to explore diverse themes, directing adaptations, thrillers, and socially conscious pieces while maintaining a distinctive visual style marked by crisp framing and economical storytelling. His final directorial effort came in 2007, closing a remarkable chapter that influenced subsequent generations of French filmmakers.
