Sara Stewart

Sara Stewart, born Sara Scott Griffith on 28 June 1966 in Edinburgh, Scotland, is a versatile Scottish actress whose career has spanned more than three decades. The daughter of American parents, she spent part of her childhood in the United States before returning to the United Kingdom, where she honed her craft at the Royal Central School of Speech and Drama. After graduating, Stewart made London her home and quickly became a familiar face on both stage and screen, earning a reputation for her chameleon‑like ability to embody a wide range of characters. Throughout her extensive theatre work, she has tackled classic and contemporary pieces alike, including Noël Coward’s Present Laughter and the Royal Shakespeare Company’s production of A Month in the Country, where she portrayed Natalya Petrovna. Her performances at the National Theatre, the Royal Court, and the Donmar Warehouse have consistently showcased her skill in navigating complex emotional landscapes, earning critical praise for both her comedic timing and dramatic depth. On television, Stewart’s credits read like a who’s‑who of British drama and comedy, from early appearances in Taggart and Minder to memorable roles in Monarch of the Glen, Rebus, and Holby City. She earned particular notice as Stella in the acclaimed series Sugar Rush and as a transgender character in Ashes to Ashes. More recent work includes guest spots on Father Brown, Grace, and Unforgotted, as well as recurring roles in Fresh Meat and Doctor Foster. In film, Stewart has contributed to a diverse slate of projects, appearing as Martha Wayne in Batman Begins, and taking parts in The Road to Guantanamo, A Cock and Bull Story, and Mrs. Brown. Her voice work extends to an episode of Doctor Who, further illustrating her adaptability across media. Outside of her professional life, Stewart holds dual citizenship in the United Kingdom and the United States and resides in Twickenham. She married fellow actor Aden Gillett, with whom she has two children, Sam and India, and later dated actor Mark Powley. After undergoing surgery for breast cancer in 2011, she became an outspoken advocate for cancer awareness and research, using her platform to support related charitable causes.
