Rosalind Marquis (born Rosalind Saindon on 11 September 1915 in Chicago, Illinois) was an American actress and singer whose brief Hollywood career in the late 1930s left a modest but memorable imprint on the era's musical‑drama films. The sixth of eight children of Leopold Saindon, an usher of modest means, and Cora Vadeboncoeur, she attended St. Patrick’s Academy before winning a beauty contest at the 1933‑34 Century of Progress exposition, an achievement that propelled her to New York City where she honed her vocal talents on the theatrical stage. Her transition to film came after Warner Bros. signed her, and she appeared in three lead roles—including Gold Diggers of 1937 (1936), Echo Mountain (1936) and Marked Woman (1937) as Florrie Liggett—yet studio mismanagement prevented her from achieving lasting stardom. In 1938, at the age of twenty‑three, Marquis abandoned her acting pursuits and returned full‑time to her first love, singing, eventually serving as a backing vocalist for the legendary Edith Piaf on a U.S. tour. Her personal life was marked by three marriages: the brief union with William L. Waller in 1936, a subsequent marriage to Edwin Diamond Axton II—her second husband whom she met while touring with Piaf—and finally to Thomas E. Saxe Jr, who remained her spouse until his death. With Axton she bore three children, balancing motherhood with her musical commitments until she retired permanently from the stage. Marquis spent her later years away from the spotlight, eventually settling in Naples, Florida, where she passed away on 12 June 2006 at the age of ninety‑one. Though her filmography is short, her story reflects the volatile nature of Hollywood's studio system and the resilience of a performer who found fulfillment beyond the silver screen.
