Ronald Peet

Ronald William Pelton was born on November 18, 1941 in Benton Harbor, Michigan, United States, and quickly distinguished himself academically, graduating in the top quarter of his high‑school class in 1960. After high school he enlisted in the United States Air Force, where he received intensive training in Russian and served as a voice‑intercept processing specialist during a 15‑month tour in Peshawar, Pakistan, in the early 1960s. Following his discharge he transferred to the National Security Agency, where he worked as a civilian intelligence analyst, eventually attaining a position in the highly secretive A Group and earning an annual salary of $24,500. Financial pressures began to mount in the late 1970s, leading Pelton to file for personal bankruptcy in 1979 and to resign from the NSA. Over the next few years he held several unrelated jobs, but his expertise in signals intelligence remained a valuable, albeit covert, asset. In 1980 Pelton made contact with the Soviet Embassy in Washington, D.C., and began supplying the KGB with highly classified information, most notably details of Operation Ivy Bells, the undersea cable‑tapping program designed to monitor Soviet naval communications. He traveled to Vienna in 1980 and 1983, where he was debriefed for up to eight hours a day by KGB officers, receiving roughly $37,000 for his disclosures. In 1985, after a defecting Soviet officer identified him, the FBI placed Pelton under intensive surveillance and eventually confronted him with recorded evidence, leading to his confession that he had received $35,000 for his espionage. He was tried, convicted of multiple counts of espionage, and sentenced in 1986 to three concurrent life terms plus ten years, although he was released from the Federal Correctional Institution, Allenwood on November 24, 2015 after more than two decades of incarceration. Pelton spent his final years in Frederick, Maryland, where he died on September 6, 2022, at the age of eighty, leaving behind a complex legacy as one of the most notorious American spies of the Cold War era.
