After earning a Bachelor of Fine Arts in acting from Carnegie Mellon University, Foxworth made a name for himself on the Washington, D.C. stage at Arena Stage, where his powerful presence attracted early critical attention. He notably turned down the iconic role of J.R. Ewing on *Dallas*, a decision that cemented his reputation as an actor guided by artistic choice rather than commercial allure.
