What's After the Movie
Ricky Martin, born Enrique Martín Morales on December 24, 1971 in San Juan, Puerto Rico, began his public career as a child when he appeared in television commercials at the age of nine and joined the legendary boy band Menudo at twelve. His early years with Menudo gave him intensive touring experience and exposure to international markets, but the demanding schedule also taught him the discipline that would later shape his solo artistry. After leaving Menudo in 1989, Martin moved to Mexico City, where a chance audition led to his first acting role in the telenovela Alcanzar una estrella II, and simultaneously secured a record deal with Sony Discos, launching his solo music career with the self‑titled 1991 album that produced hits such as “Fuego Contra Fuego.” The 1995 album A Medio Vivir marked his breakthrough abroad, especially with the infectious single “María,” which blended Latin rhythms, African percussion, and pop hooks to become a worldwide chart‑topper and a hallmark of the emerging Latin pop explosion. His 1998 record Vuelve earned a Grammy and introduced “La Copa de la Vida,” the official anthem of the 1998 FIFA World Cup, cementing his status as a global sports and music icon. The 1999 English‑language album Ricky Martin delivered the megahit “Livin’ la Vida Loca,” a song that topped the Billboard Hot 100 and dominated charts in more than twenty countries, solidifying his role as the catalyst of the late‑1990s Latin crossover into mainstream pop. Beyond music, Martin proved his versatility on screen, starring in the soap opera General Hospital, performing on Broadway in Les Misérables and Evita, and earning an Emmy nomination for his portrayal of Antonio D’Amico in The Assassination of Gianni Versace: American Crime Story. As an activist, he founded the Ricky Martin Foundation in 2004 to combat human trafficking, has been a vocal advocate for LGBT rights, and uses his platform to support humanitarian causes worldwide. With over 70 million records sold, multiple Grammy and Latin Grammy awards, a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, and a legacy that paved the way for artists such as Shakira and Jennifer Lopez, Ricky Martin remains one of the most influential and celebrated figures in contemporary Latin entertainment.
