Reizô Nomoto

Reizō Nomoto (野本礼三, Nomoto Reizō), born Reijiro Nomoto on September 17, 1930 in Tokyo, Japan, emerged as one of the most reliable character actors in the Japanese voice‑over industry. After completing his education in post‑war Tokyo, he entered the entertainment field in 1954, signing with the talent agency Arts Vision, which would represent him for the rest of his career. Over the ensuing decades Nomoto developed a reputation for his deep, resonant timbre and his ability to imbue secondary characters with nuanced personality, a talent that made him a staple in both television animation and feature films. His early work included minor roles in classic series such as Ganso Tensai Bakabon and GeGeGe no Kitarō, where he honed his craft and built connections with directors who would later rely on his dependable voice for more prominent parts. By the late 1970s and early 1980s, Nomoto’s name appeared regularly in credits for high‑profile productions, solidifying his status as a veteran of the medium. His career trajectory reflects the evolution of Japanese anime itself, moving from modest black‑and‑white broadcasts to expansive, internationally acclaimed franchises.

In the golden era of shōnen and sci‑fi anime, Nomoto delivered memorable performances as the wise Rou Dai Kaioshin in Dragon Ball Z and Dragon Ball GT, the flamboyant Pierrot in Genesis Climber Mospeada, and the dignified Doctor Masago in the OVA Adventure Kid. He also contributed his voice to celebrated films such as Ninja Scroll (Mushizou) and Porco Rosso, as well as to video games like Genei Tōgi: Shadow Struggle. Beyond animation, Nomoto lent his talents to tokusatsu series, dubbing foreign works, and even providing narration for educational programs. His final years were marked by continued work up until his sudden death on July 7, 2006, after an unexpected illness; he was 75. Though the exact cause remained undisclosed, his legacy endures through the countless characters that continue to entertain new generations of fans.
