Redd Foxx

John Elroy Sanford, better known by his stage name Redd Foxx, was an American stand‑up comedian and actor whose career spanned more than five decades and reshaped Black comedy on television and in nightclubs. Born on 1922‑12‑09 in St. Louis, Missouri, he was raised on Chicago’s South Side by his half‑Seminole mother Mary Hughes after his father abandoned the family, and he first appeared on radio at age sixteen on the Major Bowes Amateur Hour. Foxx honed his raunchy nightclub act in the 1950s, earning the nickname “King of the Party Records” as he released over fifty comedy albums that blended word‑play, observational, and blue comedy while breaking racial barriers by performing for white audiences on the Las Vegas Strip. His breakthrough came when Dinah Washington urged him to move to Los Angeles, where a performance at the Brass Rail caught the attention of Dootone Records and launched his recording career. The most iconic chapter of his life arrived in 1972 when he starred as Fred G. Sanford in the hit sitcom Sanford and Son, a role that made him a household name, earned him a Golden Globe, and secured three Emmy nominations; the show’s famous catch‑phrases and mock heart attacks became part of popular culture. After leaving the series in 1977, Foxx attempted several television ventures, including The Redd Foxx Show (1986) and The Royal Family (1991), while also appearing in films such as Harlem Nights (1989). His personal life was tumultuous: he married four times—to Evelyn Killebrew, Betty Jean Harris (with whom he adopted her daughter Debraca), Joi Yun Chi Chung, and Ka Ho Cho—and faced massive financial setbacks, filing for bankruptcy in the 1980s and battling IRS tax liens that seized his possessions. On October 11, 1991, while rehearsing for The Royal Family, Foxx suffered a fatal heart attack on set, ending a career that had influenced comedians like Richard Pryor, Chris Rock, and even inspired Jamie Foxx’s stage name. Posthumously, he was honored with a star on the St. Louis Walk of Fame and remembered as a pioneering figure whose bold humor and charismatic presence forever changed American entertainment.
