What's After the Movie
Raj Singh Chaudhary (born 13 July 1975) is an Indian actor, screenwriter, and film director whose career has spanned over two decades, beginning in 2003 and continuing to the present day. Born in the hill‑station town of Darjeeling, West Bengal, he pursued a degree in software engineering at B.M.S. College of Engineering and later at B.M.S. Institute of Technology and Management. After completing his studies, Chaudhary briefly worked as a model before launching his own software company in Bangalore. A devastating fraud perpetrated by his business partners forced him to abandon the tech world and relocate to Mumbai, where he sought a new path in the entertainment industry. Inspired by the gritty realism of Anurag Kashyap’s Satya, he began writing his own script, drawing on personal experiences of ragging and the psychological trauma associated with student abuse.
His script caught Kashyap’s attention, leading to a mentorship that reshaped the project into the critically acclaimed Gulaal, where Chaudhary starred as the lead and received widespread praise for his performance. He also contributed to the cult classic Black Friday by playing a pivotal role on set and authored the short story that became the basis for No Smoking. Subsequent work includes a notable performance in Sushil Rajpal’s Antardwand, which won the 2007 National Film Award for Best Film on Social Issues. Throughout his career, Chaudhary has demonstrated a versatile talent, seamlessly moving between acting, writing, and directing while maintaining a commitment to socially relevant storytelling. His journey from a software entrepreneur to a celebrated figure in Indian cinema underscores his resilience, creativity, and passion for the craft.
