What's After the Movie

Philippe Petit

Philippe Petit is a legendary French highwire artist whose daring feats have captured the imagination of audiences worldwide. Born on 13 August 1949 in Nemours, Seine-et-Marne, France, he discovered magic and juggling at a very early age and took his first steps on a tightrope at just sixteen, quickly teaching himself a repertoire of aerial tricks that would later define his career. Throughout the 1970s he became a fixture of New York’s street performance scene, mesmerizing park‑goers in Washington Square with juggling acts and impromptu slack‑line demonstrations, while simultaneously planning what would become known as the artistic crime of the century. After secretly installing a cable between the towers of Notre‑Dame de Paris in 1971 and the Sydney Harbour Bridge in 1973, Petit executed his most famous stunt on 7 August 1974, walking a 450‑pound steel wire between the twin towers of the World Trade Center for 45 minutes, completing eight passes that included walking, dancing, lying down, and saluting the crowds below. His meticulous six‑year preparation involved covert photographs, fabricated IDs, and a daring bow‑and‑arrow method to string the cable across a 138‑foot gap at a height of 1,350 feet. The stunt earned him worldwide acclaim, a lifetime observation‑deck pass, and a legendary status that was later immortalized in the Oscar‑winning documentary Man on Wire (2008) and the feature film The Walk (2015). Beyond the wire, Petit has authored numerous books, taught workshops, built a 18th‑century barn in the Catskills, and served as artist‑in‑residence at the Cathedral of Saint John the Divine, continually sharing his philosophy of daring, creativity, and the joy of defying gravity.
