Paul O'Grady was an English entertainer whose career spanned more than four decades, beginning in the late 1970s as a pioneering drag performer and evolving into one of the United Kingdom’s most beloved television personalities. Born Paul James O'Grady on 14 June 1955 in Tranmere, Cheshire, England, he grew up in a working‑class Irish‑Migrant family and left school at sixteen to work for the DHSS before moving to London, where he created the flamboyant drag persona Lily Savage in 1978. The Lily Savage character quickly became a staple of the Royal Vauxhall Tavern circuit, using biting humour and a distinctively sharp tongue to champion gay rights during the AIDS crisis while also delivering comedy that appealed to wider audiences. O'Grady’s breakthrough into mainstream television arrived with appearances on The Big Breakfast and Blankety Blank, where his quick wit and unapologetic style earned him a Perrier Comedy Award nomination in 1992 and a legion of fans beyond the gay club scene. By the early 2000s O'Grady had shed the drag costume for a more personal on‑screen presence, launching The Paul O'Grady Show on ITV in 2004, a daytime chat programme celebrated for its warm‑hearted banter, surprise celebrity guests, and the beloved inclusion of his rescue dog Buster. The show’s success led to a lucrative move to Channel 4, subsequent specials such as Paul O'Grady: For the Love of Dogs, and a revival of the classic game show Blind Date. His compassionate advocacy for animal welfare, outspoken political commentary, and candid memoirs cemented his reputation as a cultural icon who remained deeply connected to his working‑class roots. Throughout his life he was married to Teresa Fernandes (1977–2005) and later to André Portasio (married 2017), and he raised one daughter, Sharon Lee Jansen, born in 1974.
