Born on 9 November 1913 in the rural townland of Lammy near Omagh in County Tyrone, Ireland, he emerged from humble agricultural beginnings as the son of farmer Patrick McAlinney and his wife Anastasia O'Neill to become one of the most recognizable supporting actors in British entertainment.
