What's After the Movie
Park Dietz is a renowned forensic psychiatrist whose career has spanned more than four decades, making him one of the most influential figures in criminal psychiatry. Born on August 13, 1948 in Camp Hill, Pennsylvania, he grew up in a medically‑oriented family—his father and grandfather were physicians and his mother a trained nurse—instilling an early interest in the human mind. He earned an A.B. cum laude in psychology and biology from Cornell University in 1970, followed by an MD, PhD, and MPH from Johns Hopkins University, where he also contributed to landmark research on injury prevention using the Haddon Matrix. After completing his residency at Johns Hopkins and a forensic psychiatry fellowship at the University of Pennsylvania, Dietz joined Harvard Medical School as its youngest assistant professor at age 29, simultaneously directing forensic psychiatry at Bridgewater State Hospital. His expertise vaulted to national prominence during the 1982 trial of John Hinckley Jr., where his testimony helped shape modern standards for legal insanity. Since then he has consulted on dozens of high‑profile cases, including the prosecutions of serial killers Jeffrey Dahmer, Ted Kaczynski, and the D.C. sniper attacks, as well as the controversial Andrea Yates trial. In addition to courtroom work, Dietz founded Park Dietz & Associates, authored over one hundred scholarly publications, and served as president of the American Academy of Psychiatry and the Law. He has received numerous honors, such as the Seymour Pollack Award, and remains an active advisor to the FBI’s Behavioral Analysis Unit and the New York State Police Forensic Sciences Unit, continuing to influence violence‑prevention policy and forensic methodology worldwide.
