Olof Thunberg

Fritz‑Olof Thunberg was born on 21 May 1925 in Västerås, Sweden, into a family that would later become notable for its environmental activism. As a teenager he founded the amateur theatre club Scenklubben, which counted future star Lars Ekborg and poet Bo Setterlind among its members, demonstrating an early flair for collaboration and leadership. He honed his craft at Calle Flygare’s drama school in Stockholm before entering the prestigious Royal Dramatic Training Academy from 1950 to 1952, interrupting his studies with performances in public parks during the late 1940s. Upon graduation he joined the provincial Östgöta Theatre, where he quickly expanded his repertoire by directing as well as acting, establishing a reputation for versatility that would define his long‑standing career. By the early 1950s he had become a recognizable voice on Swedish radio, most famously hosting the horror‑themed program Mannen i svart, where his deep, resonant timbre and skillful use of sound effects captivated listeners across the nation.**

In film and television, Thunberg built an extensive résumé of supporting and voice‑over roles that spanned five decades. He appeared in Ingmar Bergman’s 1963 drama Winter Light as the church organist Fredrik, and became beloved by younger audiences as the Swedish voice of the iconic cartoon bear Bamse and the cunning tiger Shere Khan in both the 1967 Disney classic The Jungle Book and its 2003 sequel. His vocal talents also brought life to characters such as Agaton Sax, Trusty in Lady and the Tramp, and the narrator in The Land Before Time. Beyond acting, he directed television productions and even hosted the popular radio show Sommar on Sveriges Radio P1 in 2006. Thunberg’s personal life was interwoven with the Swedish arts scene: he was married to actress Ingrid Johansson (1950‑1954) and later to Mona Andersson (1978‑1990), fathered two children including actor Svante Thunberg, and became the grandfather of climate activist Greta Thunberg. He passed away in Stockholm on 24 February 2020 at the age of 94, leaving behind a legacy of artistic dedication and cultural influence.
