Norm Macdonald, born Norman Gene Macdonald on October 17, 1959 in Quebec City, Quebec, Canada, was a Canadian stand‑up comedian, actor, and writer whose deadpan delivery and subtly absurd storytelling made him a singular voice in modern comedy. He grew up in a bilingual military town where his parents, both English‑speaking teachers, deliberately kept the family away from French, shaping his early sense of outsider humor that would later surface in his jokes about cultural quirks. After brief stints studying mathematics, philosophy at Carleton University and journalism at Algonquin College, Macdonald began performing at Ottawa’s Yuk Yuk’s in 1985, quickly earning the Montreal Gazette’s praise as one of the country’s “hottest comics.” His break came in 1993 when he joined Saturday Night Live as a writer and cast member, eventually anchoring the iconic Weekend Update segment for three and a half seasons, where his willingness to mock high‑profile figures such as O. J. Simpson and Michael Jackson sparked both controversy and admiration. Following his SNL exit in 1998, he co‑wrote and starred in the cult comedy Dirty Work, launched the sitcom The Norm Show, and lent his voice to the Dr. Dolittle franchise, showcasing a versatile range that spanned live‑action and animation. Between 2013 and 2018 he hosted the video‑podcast Norm Macdonald Live and the Netflix series Norm Macdonald Has a Show, interviewing fellow comedians while maintaining his trademark understated humor.
