What's After the Movie
Norm Lewis is an American baritone actor and singer whose career has spanned more than three decades across Broadway, the West End, film, television, and regional theatre. Born on June 2, 1963 in Tallahassee, Florida, and raised in nearby Eatonville, he graduated from Edgewater High School in 1981 before working at the Orlando Sentinel and discovering his passion for the stage. His professional break came in the early 1990s when he debuted on Broadway in The Who’s Tommy (1993) and soon after appeared as a replacement in Miss Saigon, establishing himself as a versatile performer with a powerful vocal range. Lewis’s résumé includes originating the role of Jake in Side Show (1997), portraying Eddie in The Wild Party, and playing Billy Flynn in the 2004 revival of Chicago, while also participating in benefit concerts such as Dreamgirls and Hair. The actor’s most celebrated achievements involve his portrayals of iconic characters: he first embodied Inspector Javert in the 2006 Broadway revival of Les Misérables, becoming the first African‑American to play the part in a major English‑language production, and later reprised the role in London, the 25th‑anniversary concert, and at The Muny. In 2007 he originated King Triton in Disney’s The Little Mermaid on Broadway, and his performance earned a Tony nomination when he later took on the title role in a re‑imagined Porgy and Bess (2011). In 2014 Lewis made history as the first Black actor to star as the Phantom in Andrew Lloyd Webber’s The Phantom of the Opera on Broadway, later returning to the role in the sequel Love Never Dies in the West End (2023). Beyond theatre, he has appeared on television in Scandal, released solo albums such as This Is the Life! (2008), and remains active as a recording artist, concert performer, and even investor in a clothing venture, continually expanding his artistic footprint.
