Nina Hoss (German: [ˈniːna hɔs]; born 7 July 1975) is a distinguished German stage, film, and television actress. She is widely recognized for her productive collaboration with director Christian Petzold in globally acclaimed films such as Barbara (2012) and Phoenix (2014). Hoss has also showcased her extraordinary acting prowess in The White Masai (2005), The Audition (2019), and the 2020 film, Pelican Blood. Her versatility spans from German cinema to American television series, each providing a new platform for her to demonstrate her competencies. She starred in the American TV series Homeland (2014-2017), The Defeated (2020), and Jack Ryan (2022). In 2013, Hoss received the prestigious Order of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany and, in 2015, was appointed a Chevalier de l'Ordre des Arts et des Lettres in France.
Born and raised in Stuttgart, West Germany, Hoss exhibited a flair for performing arts from a young age, engaging in radio plays at seven and making her stage debut at 14. She graduated from the Ernst Busch Academy of Dramatic Arts in Berlin in 1997. Her first major success appeared in 1996 with the title role Rosemarie Nitribitt in A Girl Called Rosemary, a Bernd Eichinger-directed drama. In 2007, her performance in Yella earned her the Silver Bear for Best Actress at the Berlin International Film Festival. Hoss has also lent her talent to stage productions, notably at the Deutsches Theater in Berlin and the Schaubühne theatre. Off-screen, Hoss is engaged in a variety of social and political causes, including the Make Poverty History campaign and the fight against female genital mutilation. Her performances extend to musical collaborations and jury roles in various international film festivals.
