What's After the Movie

Neil Melville

Neil Melville is a versatile Australian actor, singer, producer and director whose career spans over five decades, beginning in the early 1970s when he fronted the Geelong rock band “SteamHammer”. After earning a Bachelor of Arts (Hons) in English Literature, Philosophy and Drama from Adelaide’s Flinders University, he quickly made his mark on the stage, notably performing in the world premiere of Jack Hibberd’s The Les Darcy Show for the Adelaide Festival in 1974. His early professional work included a year with the Little Patch Children’s Theatre, where he wrote the vaudeville‑documentary Australian Born, Australian Bred, and stints with the South Australian Theatre Company and the South Australian Arts Council, showcasing his talent both as a writer and performer. As actor‑and‑director‑in‑residence at the University of Melbourne, Melville secured television roles in classics such as Cop Shop, The Sullivans, Carson’s Law and The Flying Doctors, while also pioneering cabaret projects like Busking with Brel and starring in major stage productions of Evita, Oklahoma! and Les Misérables. His television résumé is extensive, featuring appearances in Rafferty’s Rules, A Country Practice, The Henderson Kids, Col’n Carpenter, Snowy, Phoenix, Janus, Ocean Girl, Snowy River: The McGregor Saga, Correlli, Flipper, Stingers, Blue Heelers, The Secret Life of Us, McLeod’s Daughters, Underbelly, Jack Irish, Offspring, Wentworth, Playing for Keeps and Five Bedrooms, demonstrating a remarkable ability to adapt to diverse genres. On the big screen he has contributed to films like Brilliant Lies and Run Rabbit Run, while also engaging his musical expertise as Executive Producer on his ex‑wife Debra Byrne’s album Heaven Down Here. Off‑camera, Melville’s personal life reflects his artistic milieu: he met Byrne during a production of Les Misérables and married her in 1989, later divorcing in 1997; the same year he wed costume designer Bo Melville, with whom he resides in Glenaire, Victoria, near the scenic Great Ocean Road, continuing to enrich Australian performing arts.
