Nancy Valentine

Born Annette Valentine on January 21, 1928, in St. Albans, Queens, New York City, Nancy Valentine grew up as the middle child of five in a family where her father operated a sign painting business. She transitioned from brief jobs as a stock clerk and nightclub cigarette girl to a lucrative modeling career, beginning with the Conover agency but achieving prominence at Powers, where her natural appearance replaced forced glamour. This success led to a Parade magazine cover in February 1946 and earnings of $750 weekly while she was still a teenager. Her modeling career intersected with Hollywood when candid photographs with Orson Welles and rumors of involvement with Howard Hughes generated significant publicity, with Hughes reportedly financing her relocation to California in 1946. Despite signing with Mervyn LeRoy and subsequently David O. Selznick's Vanguard Films, she languished for two years without screen credit, taking acting classes while appearing in uncredited bit parts for MGM and Warner Brothers, including Father of the Bride and The Girl from Jones Beach, before finally receiving billing in Universal's The Black Castle in 1952.

Valentine became a fixture in gossip columns not for her acting but for her controversial romance with Jagaddipendra Narayan, the Maharaja of Cooch-Behar. Their disputed 1949 ceremony, which the Indian government refused to recognize as a valid marriage, created an international scandal that contributed to her withdrawal from public life and a nervous breakdown. She entered the Self-Realization Fellowship convent in Los Angeles in 1953, remaining as a novitiate for several years and crediting meditation with restoring her mental health before resuming her entertainment career. After obtaining an annulment from Narayan, she married Frederick Tillinghast III in 1956, with whom she had a daughter before their 1958 divorce. She later wed actor-director Everett Chambers in 1961, producing another daughter prior to their 1975 separation. Her professional resurgence materialized primarily on television, where she appeared in over thirty series including Dragnet, Tales of Wells Fargo, 77 Sunset Strip, and The Real McCoys, while securing supporting film roles in productions such as Jack Webb's -30- and Tess of the Storm Country. She spent her final decades in Malibu, California, where she died on July 31, 2017, at age eighty-nine, leaving behind three children and a complex legacy spanning glamour, spiritual seeking, and resilient reinvention in the entertainment industry.
