Nacho Sánchez

José Ignacio "Nacho" Sánchez Amor is a prominent Spanish politician whose career spans over three decades, marked by steady advancement from regional to European institutions. Born on 15 May 1960 in Cáceres, Spain, he grew up in the nearby town of Jaraíz de la Vera before moving to Madrid to pursue higher education and early political activism. His early involvement with the People’s Socialist Party in 1977 and subsequent transition to the Spanish Socialist Workers’ Party in 1978 laid the groundwork for a lifelong commitment to progressive politics. After abandoning medical studies, Sánchez Amor earned a licentiate degree in Law from the Complutense University of Madrid and completed postgraduate work at the Centro de Estudios Constitucionales, equipping him with a robust legal foundation. His professional trajectory began in 1986 when he joined the Corps of attorneys for the regional government of Extremadura, a role that introduced him to the inner workings of public administration. From 1996 to 2004 he served as Chief of Staff to Regional President Juan Carlos Rodríguez Ibarra, gaining valuable experience in executive coordination and policy implementation. He was appointed Vice‑President of Extremadura in 2004, a position he held until 2007, after which he was elected to the Assembly of Extremadura and became the spokesperson for the Socialist parliamentary group. At the national level, Sánchez Amor entered the Spanish Congress of Deputies in 2011, securing re‑election in 2015 and 2016, and contributed to the Parliamentary Assembly of the OSCE, chairing its Committee on Democracy, Human Rights and Humanitarian Questions. In 2018 he was appointed Secretary of State for Territorial Policy, a role he fulfilled until his election to the European Parliament in 2019, where he now serves on the Committee on Foreign Affairs, the Subcommittee on Human Rights, and various inter‑groups, acting as rapporteur on Turkey and leading EU election observation missions.
