Murad Kostanyan

Murad Kostani Kostanyan was a distinguished Armenian actor whose career spanned over six decades, leaving an indelible mark on Soviet Armenian theatre and cinema. Born on August 25, 1902, in the village of Haftvan in Salmas, Qajar Iran (then Persia), Kostanyan emerged as one of the most prolific theatrical performers of his generation, bridging cultural traditions between his birthplace and his Armenian heritage. His journey in the performing arts began with rigorous training at the Moscow Armenian Theatral Studio, where he studied from 1920 to 1925, with an additional year of study from 1927 to 1928, absorbing the rich theatrical traditions of Moscow while maintaining his distinct Armenian artistic identity. This solid educational foundation prepared him for a remarkable career that would see him become one of the founding figures of the Leninakan Drama Theatre named after Mravian, an institution that would nurture Armenian dramatic arts for generations to come and establish him as a pillar of the theatrical community.

From 1925 to 1927, Kostanyan honed his craft as a member of the Tbilisi Armenian Theatre, gaining valuable experience that would serve him throughout his life and establishing himself as a versatile performer capable of tackling diverse roles. However, it was his move to Yerevan in 1930 that marked the beginning of his most significant artistic contribution, as he joined the prestigious Sundukyan State Academic Theatre of Yerevan, where he would remain until his passing on January 3, 1989, dedicating nearly sixty years to this single institution. During his extensive tenure at this venerable theatre, he portrayed an astonishing repertoire of over 1,500 roles, demonstrating remarkable versatility, emotional depth, and an unwavering dedication to his craft that earned him the admiration of audiences and critics alike.
