What's After the Movie
Mohit Chauhan (born 11 March 1966) is an Indian playback singer, lyricist, composer and philanthropist whose voice has become a staple of contemporary Hindi cinema. Born in the town of Nahan in Himachal Pradesh, he grew up moving across the state due to his father’s transferable job, attending schools such as Our Lady of Snows Highschool in Kullu and St. Luke’s Senior Secondary School in Solan. Despite never receiving formal musical training, Chauhan cultivated his talent by practicing with his elder brother and was heavily influenced by his grandfather, a classical harmonium player, as well as the legendary Kishore Kumar. He earned a Master of Science in Geology from a government college in Dharamshala before embarking on a musical career that would eventually eclipse his academic background.
_Chauhan first entered the spotlight as the vocalist of the band Silk Route, whose debut album Boondein (1998) produced hit tracks like “Dooba Dooba” and “Pehchan”. After the band disbanded in 2008, he released a solo album Fitoor (2009) and swiftly transitioned to Bollywood playback singing. His breakthrough came with A.R. Rahman’s “Khoon Chala” from Rang De Basanti, followed by iconic songs such as “Tum Se Hi” (Jab We Met) and “Masakali” (Delhi‑6), earning him multiple Filmfare, Zee Cine and IIFA awards. Throughout the 2010s he dominated the charts with tracks from Rockstar, Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara and Once Upon a Time in Mumbai, while also experimenting in regional languages and animated film dubbing. Beyond music, Chauhan is a committed philanthropist, supporting the National Skill Development Corporation and founding the animal‑rights charity Animals Are People Too, feeding hundreds of stray dogs in Delhi. He married Prarthna Gehlot in 2012 and continues to influence Indian music across genres, earning a place on Forbes’ Celebrity 100 list in 2012.
