Mike Keneally

Mike Keneally (born Michael Joseph Keneally on December 20, 1961) is an American musician, songwriter, and composer renowned for his prodigious multi‑instrumental talents and his long association with avant‑garde rock legends. Growing up on Long Island before relocating to San Diego, he received an electric organ at age seven and a guitar at eleven, quickly adding bass, drums and keyboards to his arsenal. Early influences ranged from the Beatles to the quirky theme music of The Wallace and Ladmo Show and the cinematic scores of 2001: A Space Odyssey, shaping a style that blends hard rock, progressive rock, art rock and even melodic death metal. By 1985 he founded the cult local band Drop Control, establishing himself as a fixture of the San Diego music scene and beginning a career that would span more than three decades. Keneally’s breakthrough came when he auditioned for Frank Zappa in 1988, impressing the composer with his encyclopedic memory of Zappa’s demanding repertoire. Although the tour was cut short by Zappa’s death, Keneally continued to work with Zappa’s family, notably recording and touring with Dweezil Zappa’s band Z. He has released eleven solo albums since 1992, collaborated with virtuosos such as Steve Vai, Joe Satriani, Ulver, Henry Kaiser and the Paul Green School of Rock, and contributed as a sideman on dozens of projects. Highlights include arranging and performing the piano‑reduction series of Vai’s catalog, co‑leading the power trio KMB with Marco Minnemann and Bryan Beller, and joining Satriani’s worldwide touring band in 2013. In addition to performance, Keneally has produced records, curated remastered reissues of his back‑catalog, and participated in guitar camps like the G4 Experience. His relentless curiosity and technical fluency keep him at the forefront of experimental rock, making him a vital, if often under‑recognized, figure in modern American music.
