Michelle LaVaughn Robinson Obama (born January 17, 1964 in Chicago, Illinois) is an American attorney, author, and former First Lady of the United States who combined legal expertise with a deep commitment to public service. Raised on Chicago’s South Side, she overcame socioeconomic barriers to earn a cum laude Bachelor of Arts in sociology from Princeton University in 1985 and a Juris Doctor from Harvard Law School in 1988, where she honed her advocacy skills in the Legal Aid Bureau. After law school she joined Sidley Austin, where she met Barack Obama, and later shifted to nonprofit leadership as executive director of Public Allies, setting fundraising records that stood for over a decade. From 1996 to 2008 she served as associate dean of student services at the University of Chicago and then as vice‑president for community and external affairs at the University of Chicago Medical Center, championing health equity initiatives. As First Lady (2009‑2017) she launched the widely praised Let’s Move! campaign to combat childhood obesity, the Reach Higher program to inspire education, Let Girls Learn to expand global girls’ education, and Joining Forces to support military families, while also restoring the White House kitchen garden and promoting nutrition. Her memoir Becoming (2018) became a New York Times bestseller and earned a Grammy for Best Audio Book, and she followed it with The Light We Carry (2022) and The Look (2025). Beyond writing, she has produced documentaries such as Becoming (2020), hosted podcasts, and made cameo appearances on popular television series, reinforcing her influence across media. Throughout her career she has been celebrated for her eloquence, style, and ability to translate personal experience into national advocacy, making her one of the most admired public figures of the 21st century.
