Michael Pink

Michael Pink is a renowned British choreographer, director, dancer, and theatre producer whose career spans over five decades, beginning in the mid‑1970s and continuing to the present day. Born on 18 November 1956 in York, England, he grew up in a family deeply involved in the performing arts; his parents worked for Rowntree Mackintosh, and his siblings were active in the York Amateur Opera and Dramatic Society. From an early age he sang as head chorister at St. Olave's Church, where he later married ballerina Jayne Regan in 1998. After training at the prestigious Royal Ballet School, Pink joined the London Festival Ballet in 1975, quickly earning a reputation as a versatile partner to stars such as Natalia Makarova and Patricia Ruanne. While performing, he began choreographing, earning a West End Theatre Award nomination for his piece 1914 and receiving the Royal Society of Arts Choreographic Award. His collaborations with composer Philip Feeney and designer Lez Brotherston produced landmark ballets for the UK’s Northern Ballet Theatre, where he served as Associate Artistic Director from 1993 to 1998, creating works like Dracula, The Hunchback of Notre Dame, and re‑imagined classics such as Swan Lake and Giselle.

In 2002 Pink became the artistic director of the Milwaukee Ballet, a position he still holds, making him the longest‑serving director in the company’s history. Under his leadership, the company has expanded its educational outreach, secured accreditation for its school and MBII program, and produced widely broadcast works including a PBS‑aired Peter Pan and a televised Romeo and Juliet. Pink continues to innovate, pairing his narrative‑driven choreography with contemporary design and lighting, and he remains a vital figure in bringing classical ballet into the 21st century while mentoring the next generation of dancers.
