Mervat Amin

Mervat Amin, born Mervat Mostafa Amin on November 24, 1948 in El Minya, Egypt, emerged as one of the most iconic figures of Egyptian cinema during the golden era of the 1970s and early 1980s. Raised in the affluent district of Heliopolis, she was the daughter of Dr. Mohammed Mostafa Amin, a respected physician from Upper Egypt, and a Scottish mother who served as headmistress of the Primary Section of the English School in Cairo. After completing a bachelor's degree in English Literature at Ain Shams University, Amin pursued acting and made her film debut in the 1968 drama Nfus Ha'irah, starring alongside Ahmed Mazhar. That same year she appeared in Thalath Nesaa with Salah Zulfikar, but her breakthrough arrived when she secured the leading role opposite legendary singer‑actor Abdel Halím Hafez in his final film, Abi foq al‑Shagara (1969). The chemistry and screen presence she displayed quickly cemented her reputation, and she went on to star in a string of commercial successes, becoming a household name whose performances were praised for their emotional depth and charismatic charm. Throughout the 1970s she headlined numerous box‑office hits, collaborating with top directors and fellow stars, and her versatility allowed her to transition seamlessly between drama, romance, and comedy, while also lending her voice to animated features as a skilled voice actress. She continued to be an active presence in film and television well into the 21st century, maintaining a dedicated fan base and influencing generations of performers. Her personal life was equally public; Amin has been married five times, most notably to guitarist Omar Khorshid and actor Hussein Fahmy, with whom she shares a daughter, Menna. Despite the turbulence of her marriages, she has remained a resilient and beloved figure in the Arab entertainment industry, celebrated for both her artistic contributions and her enduring elegance.
