Merna Kennedy

Merna Kennedy, born Maude Kahler on September 7, 1908 in Kankakee, Illinois, was an American actress who made a swift but memorable transition from vaudeville stages to the silent silver screen and later to early talkies. The daughter of Maud Reed and German‑American butcher‑turned‑chiropractor John Kahler, she spent her early childhood touring with her brother Melvin (known as Merle) as a singing‑and‑dancing duo on the Orpheum and Pantages circuits, a experience that forged her stage presence and physical stamina. After a tragic accident ended the sibling act, Lita Grey—future wife of Charlie Chaplin—encouraged the young Merna to pursue film work, leading to her breakthrough role as the circus bareback rider in Chaplin’s 1928 masterpiece The Circus. Her striking red hair and muscular legs, honed from years of dance, made her ideal for the physically demanding part, and Chaplin himself praised her natural charm. Following the success of The Circus, Kennedy appeared in a string of silent and early sound productions, including Barnum Was Right (1929), Skinner Steps Out (1929), The King of Jazz (1930), The Midnight Special (1930), The Gay Buckaroo (1932), and the fast‑paced musical Wonder Bar (1934). She worked steadily from 1928 to 1934, a period noted in her biography as "years active: 1928‑1934," and shared the screen with notable stars of the era, demonstrating versatility across comedy, drama, and musical genres. Despite a promising filmography, her career was brief; she chose to retire in 1934 after marrying renowned choreographer and director Busby Berkeley at Hollywood United Methodist Church. The marriage dissolved by 1936, and she later wed Master Sergeant Forrest Brayton in 1944, only to die four days later from a heart attack at the age of thirty‑six.
