Margaret Barton

Margaret Ann Barton (born 27 May 1926) is a British retired actress celebrated for her charming performance as Beryl Walters in David Lean’s iconic 1945 film Brief Encounter. Born in Finsbury Park, London, she entered the world of theatre at the tender age of twelve, a precocious talent whose small stature allowed her to convincingly portray children and youthful women during the turbulent years of World War II. By seventeen she was already sharing the stage with established stars in the West End production of Pink String and Sealing Wax at the Duke of York’s Theatre, an experience she later recalled while doodle‑bugs whirred overhead, underscoring the era’s palpable tension. It was on that very stage that she caught the eye of film luminaries David Lean and Noël Coward, who recognised her innate screen presence and cast her as the endearing Beryl, a role that would become the cornerstone of her cinematic legacy. Filmed at Denham Studios, her scenes in Brief Encounter were complemented by behind‑the‑camera observations invited by Lean, offering her a unique glimpse into the director’s craft.

After the war, Barton continued to stride confidently across stage, screen, and early television, building a varied résumé that spanned several decades. Her personal life was marked by two enduring marriages: first to Raymond James in 1949, with whom she raised a son, Michael, whose untimely death from cancer at age thirty inspired the creation of the Michael James Music Trust; and later, at the remarkable age of ninety‑two, to Rob Cave in 2018, a union that briefly crowned the couple as Britain’s oldest newlyweds.
