Marcus Brigstocke

Marcus Alexander Brigstocke, born on 8 May 1973 in Guildford, England, is a multifaceted British comedian, actor, writer and presenter whose career spans over two decades of television, radio, stage and stand‑up performances. The son of Nick Brigstocke, a stockbroker from a Welsh landed‑gentry family, and Carol Pretty, the daughter of Air Marshal Sir Walter Pretty, he was raised in Surrey and attended a series of independent schools before studying drama at the University of Bristol – a course he ultimately left without completing a degree. In his early twenties he worked on a North Sea oil rig and even appeared as a podium dancer on the music show Electric Circus, using the earnings to fund travels that later seeded material for his comedy act. Brigstocke’s breakthrough came with the comedy trio Club Seals at Bristol, which evolved into the short‑form TV series We Are History (2000‑2001). He then moved into stand‑up, releasing his first DVD Planet Corduroy in 2007 and founding the Altitude Festival in Meribel, France, in 2008. His radio portfolio is equally extensive, featuring long‑running shows such as The Now Show (1998‑present), The Late Edition (2005‑2008) and the award‑winning drama The Red (2017), while his television credits include team‑captain duties on Argumental, panel appearances on Have I Got News for You, and hosting the quirky series I’ve Never Seen Star Wars. Brigstocke has also ventured into film, playing a radio DJ in Love Actually (2003) and an arts journalist in A Short Film About John Bolton (2003). On stage he has portrayed King Arthur in Spamalot, Albert Perks in The Railway Children and the titular circus‑entrepreneur in Barnum, acquiring circus skills such as tight‑rope walking for the role. His personal life has been public; he married film‑maker Sophie Prideaux in 2001 (divorced 2013) and later wed fellow comedian Rachel Parris in 2019, with whom he shares a son born in August 2021, bringing his total number of children to three.
