Marco Cáceres

Marcos Antonio Cáceres is a Paraguayan professional football defender born on 5 May 1986 in Asunción, Paraguay. Standing at 1.85 m, he has built a reputation for his versatility, comfortably operating as a centre‑back or right‑back throughout his extensive career. He began his senior journey with Cerro Porteño in 2006, quickly making an impression with 22 league appearances in his debut season. In 2007 he transferred to Argentina’s Racing Club, where after a brief period as a substitute he cemented a regular starting position, accumulating over a hundred caps and contributing two goals across five seasons. His defensive solidity earned him a move to Newell’s Old Boys in 2012, where he enjoyed a prolific spell, playing 91 league matches and scoring seven times, demonstrating an uncommon offensive threat for a defender. Returning to Paraguay in 2016, Cáceres re‑joined Cerro Porteño, adding 142 appearances and another seven goals, before later representing Guaraní and, most recently, Tacuary, where he continues to feature as a key member of the squad. On the international stage, Cáceres earned his first cap for the Paraguay national team on 22 August 2007 against Venezuela. Although he was not selected for the historic 2010 World Cup quarter‑final squad, he participated in two Copa América tournaments, in 2011 and 2015, contributing both defensive stability and occasional offensive forays. Notably, he played a pivotal role in the 2011 semi‑final penalty shoot‑out victory over Venezuela, stepping in for the suspended Antolín Alcaraz. After a six‑year absence from the national side, Cáceres made a surprise comeback in 2021 during the World Cup qualifying campaign, coming on as a substitute in a crucial 2–1 win over Venezuela.
