Marcelle Chantal, born Marcelle Jenny Chantal Pannier on February 9, 1901, in Paris, France, was a distinguished French stage and film actress whose career spanned three decades of the early to mid-twentieth century. The daughter of Georges Favrel, she emerged as a prominent figure in the French entertainment industry, captivating audiences with her performances in both theatrical productions and cinematic works. Early in her professional journey, she married British banker Jefferson Davis Cohn in 1921, a union that led to her being professionally billed as Marcelle Jefferson-Cohn for a period of her career. This marriage lasted until Cohn's death in 1951, marking thirty years of partnership that coincided with the most active phases of her professional life. Her aristocratic bearing and sophisticated screen presence made her particularly suited for leading roles in French cinema during the 1930s and 1940s.

Chantal's filmography includes an impressive array of productions that showcased her versatility as a performer, beginning with her screen debut in Le Carnaval des vérités (1920) and continuing through significant roles in films such as Maurice Tourneur's In the Name of the Law (1932), where she delivered a notable performance that cemented her status as a leading lady.
