María Mercedes Coroy is a Guatemalan actress of Kaqchikel Maya descent who has quickly become one of the most recognizable faces of contemporary Latin American cinema. Born on September 3, 1994 in the small town of Santa María de Jesús, nestled at the foot of the Volcán de Agua, she grew up in a modest household where she helped her mother sell fruits and vegetables at the market of Palín, an experience that grounded her in the everyday realities of her community. From an early age she displayed a love for performance, participating in local folk dances and community theater productions, although formal schooling was limited to the fifth grade until a national literacy program allowed her to resume studies at seventeen. Fluent in Kaqchikel, Spanish and some Poqomam, Coroy later enrolled at the University of San Carlos de Guatemala, graduating in 2016 with a degree in acting that solidified her technical training. Her breakthrough arrived when director Jayro Bustamante discovered her during an open casting call, casting her in the critically acclaimed film Ixcanul (2015), where she portrayed a young woman living on the slopes of an active volcano, a role that earned her international attention. She subsequently reunited with Bustamante for La Llorona (2019), further demonstrating her ability to convey profound emotional depth while addressing Guatemala’s historical traumas. In 2022 she entered the global arena by joining the Marvel Cinematic Universe, appearing as Namor’s mother in Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, a cameo that introduced her to a worldwide audience. Her performances have been recognized with awards such as the Best Feature Actress at the Caracas Ibero‑American Film Festival, and she continues to be a prominent advocate for indigenous representation in film.
