Magdalena Cielecka

Magdalena Cielecka (born 20 February 1972) is a distinguished Polish actress whose career spans over three decades across stage, screen, and television. Born in Myszków, Poland, she spent her formative years in the small town of Żarki‑Letnisko, where an early fascination with performance hinted at her future vocation. After completing her secondary education, she enrolled at the Państwowa Wyższa Szkoła Teatralna (the National Academy of Theatre Arts) in Kraków, graduating in 1995. Immediately upon graduation, Cielecka joined the renowned Teatr Stary company in Kraków, honing her craft in classical and contemporary productions until 2001, when she relocated to Warsaw to become a leading member of the Teatr Rozmaitości ensemble. Her theatrical work earned critical acclaim, most notably her lead role in the 2008 Edinburgh International Festival production of 4.48 Psychosis, an adaptation of Sarah Kane’s challenging play, which showcased her emotional depth and command of complex material. While her reputation initially rested on the stage, Cielecka made an early foray into cinema with Barbara Sass’s Pokuszenie (1995) and gradually built a diverse filmography. She gained widespread recognition through roles in popular Polish TV series such as Magda M., Hotel 52 (2010‑2013), Days of Honor (2012‑2013), Pact (2015), Belfer (2016), and the long‑running legal drama The Defence (2018‑2022). Her performance in the 2023 historical drama Anxiety earned her the Polish Academy Award for Best Actress, cementing her status as one of Poland’s most respected contemporary performers.
