Born on August 20, 1961, in New York City, she grew up amid the turbulence of Upper Manhattan, running away from home and yearning for adoption, experiences that later infused her performances with a gritty realism. Her breakthrough came when a casting scout spotted her streetwise swagger at a performing‑arts academy, leading Malick to select the 15‑year‑old for the role of a wandering orphan in a 1916 Texas setting. The film’s delayed release still found Manz captivating audiences, and she quickly followed with a supporting turn in the teenage‑gang classic The Wanderers (1979) and a television stint on Dorothy.
