Krista Stadler

Krista Sager, born Krista Schuller on 28 July 1953 in Bremen, West Germany, began her professional journey as a teacher after completing her studies, a role that grounded her later political advocacy in educational reform. During her university years she joined the Communist League of West Germany (KBW), an early indicator of her commitment to left‑wing politics, and she later became a founding member of the Hamburg Greens in 1982, marking the start of a long‑lasting affiliation with Alliance 90/The Greens. Her first elected office came in 1989 when she won a seat in the Hamburg Parliament, where she served two distinct periods (1989‑1994 and 1997‑2002) and rose to lead the Green parliamentary group multiple times, notably steering the party to its best historic state‑election result of 13.9 % in 1997. In 1994 she ascended to national prominence as co‑leader of the German Green Party alongside Jürgen Trittin, a tenure that lasted until 1996 and cemented her reputation as a skilled negotiator and strategist. After her successful regional career she entered the Bundestag in the 2002 federal elections, where she co‑chaired the Alliance 90/The Greens parliamentary group from 2002‑2005 and later served as deputy chair under Renate Künast and Fritz Kuhn until 2009. From 2009‑2013 she contributed to the Committee on Education, Research and Technology Assessment and was active in the Parliamentary Friendship Group for Relations with the Baltic States. Following her legislative work, she was appointed in 2016 by Chancellor Angela Merkel to a high‑level panel overseeing conflict‑of‑interest regulations for senior officials, and she continues to influence public policy through board memberships at the Fraunhofer Institute for Systems and Innovation Research, the Heinrich Böll Foundation, Humboldt University of Berlin, and even the football club FC St. Pauli, reflecting a multifaceted commitment to both cultural and scientific advancement.
