Kevin Coughlin

Kevin J. Coughlin is an American politician and business executive who built his career in Ohio state politics over more than a decade of legislative service. Born on May 13, 1970, in Mayfield Heights, Ohio, Coughlin developed his political foundation early, graduating from Woodridge High School in Peninsula, Ohio, in 1988 before earning both a Bachelor of Arts and a Master of Public Administration from Bowling Green State University in 1992 and 1994, respectively. His electoral career began in 1996 when he successfully ran for the Ohio House of Representatives in the 46th district, filling a vacancy left by Wayne Jones, and he was sworn into office on January 3, 1997. During his tenure in the House, which lasted until February 1, 2001, Coughlin established himself as a reliable Republican vote, securing reelection victories with substantial margins of 63.64% in 1998 and 63.9% in 2000. His legislative trajectory continued upward when he was appointed to the Ohio Senate in February 2001 to represent the 27th District following the early retirement of Senator Roy Ray, where he would serve until December 31, 2010. While serving in the Senate, he notably chaired the Senate Health, Human Services, & Aging Committee from 2004 to 2011, demonstrating his sustained influence on state healthcare and social policy matters.

Following his departure from the state legislature, Coughlin transitioned into municipal administration and the private sector while maintaining his political ambitions. He served as Clerk of the Stow Municipal Court from 2013 to 2015 and has served as president of Lexington Companies, a marketing firm, since 2010. Coughlin remained active in Republican politics, serving on the board of directors of the Ohio Capital Square Foundation and as a member of the Summit County Republican Executive Committee, and he currently chairs the Ohio chapter of U.S. Term Limits. His political career saw a resurgence in 2024 when he captured the Republican nomination for Ohio's 13th congressional district after defeating primary opponents, though he narrowly lost the general election to incumbent Democrat Emilia Sykes. Initially announcing his intention to seek a rematch in the 2026 election cycle, Coughlin ultimately withdrew from the race in November 2025 following unfavorable redistricting decisions, choosing instead to continue his advocacy and business endeavors from his home in Bath Township, Ohio.
