Kenneth Won

Kenneth To King-him (7 July 1992 – 19 March 2019) was a Hong Kong‑Australian competitive swimmer whose versatility spanned the individual medley, freestyle, butterfly and breaststroke, earning him a reputation as one of the most accomplished athletes of his generation. Born in Hong Kong and raised in Australia from the age of two, To began swimming at five after an initial fear of water, rapidly advancing through his primary school program and emerging as a dominant junior talent with medals at the 2008 Commonwealth Youth Games and the 2009 Australian Youth Olympic Festival. His breakthrough came in 2009 when he shattered Ian Thorpe’s long‑standing Australian record in the 200 m individual medley, a feat that signaled his arrival on the senior stage. At the 2010 Summer Youth Olympics in Singapore, To amassed six medals—including gold in the 4 × 100 m medley relay and silver in both the 50 m freestyle and 200 m medley—establishing himself as a rising star, and he followed this with further successes at the Junior Pan Pacific Championships and the Australian Short Course Championships. Throughout the early 2010s he collected numerous national titles, set multiple Australian records, and captured a silver medal in the 100 m medley at the 2012 FINA World Swimming Championships (25 m), while also winning the overall men’s scoring title on the 2012 FINA Swimming World Cup circuit. After a series of back injuries in 2014 and a strategic switch of allegiance to Hong Kong in 2016, To broke thirteen Hong Kong national records within ten months and represented his new nation at the 2017 Summer Universiade, the 2018 Asian Games, and the 2018 FINA World Swimming Championships (25 m), where he became the first Hong Kong male swimmer to reach a World Championship final. Tragically, his promising career was cut short when he suffered a sudden cardiac arrest during a warm‑up in Florida on 19 March 2019, prompting an outpouring of grief from the international swimming community and honoring his legacy as a truly exceptional athlete.
