Karen Olivo

Karen Olivo, now publicly identified as KO, is an American stage and television actor, theatre educator, and singer born on August 7, 1976 in the South Bronx of New York City. Their multicultural heritage—Puerto Rican and Native American ancestry from their father and Dominican and Chinese roots from their mother—shaped a vibrant artistic sensibility that would later inform a career marked by groundbreaking roles. After studying at the Lois Cowles Harrison Center for the Visual and Performing Arts and briefly attending the University of Cincinnati’s College‑Conservatory of Music, KO left school to join the original Broadway cast of Rent in 1997, initially as a swing and understudy before taking on the role of Mimi on the national tour. The early 2000s saw KO appear in productions such as Brooklyn and off‑Broadway’s Miracle Brothers, while also taking small television parts on soaps and crime dramas. A major breakthrough arrived in 2008 when KO originated the role of Vanessa in In the Heights, followed by a Tony Award for Best Featured Actress in a Musical in 2009 for portraying Anita in the Broadway revival of West Side Story—the first performer ever to win a Tony for a role in that landmark musical. Subsequent highlights include starring as Angelica Schuyler in the Chicago production of Hamilton (2016‑2017), leading the original Broadway cast of Moulin Rouge! as Satine (2019‑2021) and earning a Tony nomination for Best Actress in a Musical in 2020. In 2022 KO stepped back from performing to become an associate professor and the Donald G. Robertson Director of Music Theatre at Northwestern University, where they mentor the next generation of performers. Their personal life includes marriages to actor Matt Caplan (2006‑2012) and to marketing manager James Uphoff (2014‑present), with whom they share two step‑children. In 2021 KO publicly announced a non‑binary identity and the use of they/them pronouns, adding another layer to their advocacy for social justice within the arts.
