Raised in a theatrical family—her father Sir John Mills was a distinguished actor and her mother Mary Hayley Bell a playwright—Juliet was immersed in the performing arts from infancy, even serving as an extra in her father’s 1942 war‑time classic In Which We Serve. She attended Elmhurst Ballet School, which laid the foundation for her poise and stage presence, and at age sixteen she earned critical acclaim in the Peter Shaffer play Five Finger Exercise, a role that later secured a Tony Award nomination when she transferred to Broadway in 1960. Throughout the 1960s and 1970s she balanced film and television work, appearing alongside legends such as James Stewart, Maureen O’Hara, and Jack Lemmon, and achieving a Golden Globe nomination for Billy Wilder’s 1972 romantic comedy Avanti!. Her television breakthrough came as the magical nanny Phoebe Figalilly in the beloved sitcom Nanny and the Professor, an performance that garnered another Golden Globe nod and cemented her status as a household name. In 1974 she won an Emmy for her supporting work in the miniseries QB VII, and she continued to demonstrate versatility with roles in horror (Beyond the Door), repertory theater with The Mirror Theater Ltd, and daytime drama, notably as the witch Tabitha Lenox on Passions from 1999 to 2008, which earned her a Daytime Emmy nomination. Beyond acting, Mills has been a vocal advocate of metaphysical beliefs, often speaking about angels and guides, and she remains active in theater and television to this day, illustrating a remarkable blend of talent, resilience, and personal conviction.
