Julian Paul Assange is an Australian editor, publisher and activist who gained worldwide notoriety as the founder and editor‑in‑chief of WikiLeaks, the whistleblowing platform he launched in 2006. Born on 1971‑07‑03 in Townsville, Queensland, Australia, he spent his childhood moving through more than thirty Australian towns before settling in Melbourne during his teens, where his fascination with computer programming and the emerging hacker community deepened. By age sixteen he was operating under the pseudonym Mendax, and a series of raids, social‑engineering exploits and the formation of the “International Subversives” hacking group cemented his reputation as one of Australia’s most prominent ethical hackers, a label later reinforced by the media and WikiLeaks itself. After a 1996 conviction for hacking that resulted only in a fine and a good‑behaviour bond, Assange turned his technical expertise toward activism, helping police combat child‑exploitation material before channeling his skills into creating a conduit for leaked documents. WikiLeaks’ first major publication in 2007 set the stage for the 2010 releases of the Collateral Murder video, the Afghan and Iraq war logs, and the massive diplomatic‑cable dump known as Cablegate, each sparking intense global debate about press freedom, government secrecy and the moral limits of disclosure. The ensuing legal battles led to a prolonged asylum stay (2012‑2019) in the Ecuadorian embassy in London, during which time he faced Swedish sexual‑assault investigations, UK bail violations and a host of U.S. criminal indictments under the Espionage Act. After his asylum was revoked, he was arrested in April 2019, sentenced for bail breach, and later served a 62‑month term in HM Belmarsh while the United States pursued extradition.
