Jules Dassin

Julius 'Jules' Dassin (December 18, 1911 – March 31, 2008) was a renowned American film and theatre director, producer, writer and actor. Dassin was subjected to Hollywood blacklist and subsequently moved to France, and later to Greece, where he continued his career. He was a member of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences and the Screen Directors' Guild.

Dassin's filmography includes a wide array of notable and influential movies, such as 'Du rififi chez les hommes', which won him a Best Director Award at the Cannes Film Festival. He was also nominated for several awards including an Academy Award for his film 'Never on Sunday' and a Tony Award for his Broadway production of 'Illya Darling'. Despite facing political pressure and struggle due to blacklisting in Hollywood, Dassin became a major figure in European cinema. His love for Greece was profound, greatly influencing his work and personal life, especially after his marriage to Greek actress Melina Mercouri.
