Joseph Egger (22 February 1889 – 29 August 1966) was an Austrian character actor renowned for his distinctive beard‑filled comic presence on stage and screen. Born in the industrial town of Donawitz in Styria, then part of Austria‑Hungary, he left school at the age of eighteen to join the troupe at the Leoben theatre, where his career in the performing arts began in 1907. Over the next two decades he honed his craft at prestigious venues such as Vienna’s Raimund Theater and Munich’s Deutsches Theater, becoming a celebrated music‑hall comedian known for clever “tricks” with his beard that delighted audiences across the German‑speaking world. By the 1930s film producers started to notice his talent, and he made his screen debut in 1935, eventually appearing in 76 films between 1935 and 1965. Egger specialized in playing eccentric or curmudgeonly elderly men, a niche that made him a reliable supporting actor in the popular Austrian Heimatfilm genre of the 1950s, where his warm, often comedic presence added depth to rural romances and melodramas. International audiences may remember him best from Sergio Leone’s iconic Dollars Trilogy: he portrayed the solemn coffin‑builder Piripero in A Fistful of Dollars (1964) and the prophetic Old Prophet in For a Few Dollars More (1965), roles that cemented his status as a memorable Western character actor. Off‑screen Egger was married to Erna, with whom he raised three sons, and he continued to work actively until his death in Gablitz, Lower Austria, at the age of 77, leaving a legacy of over sixty years of dedication to the performing arts.
